Interpersonal Violence Groups

Promoting Accountability, Healing, and Safer Relationships

At Anchor Mind and Wellness, we offer structured Interpersonal Violence Intervention Groups to help individuals break the cycle of violence and build healthier patterns in their relationships. Whether you are attending as part of a court requirement or seeking help voluntarily, our groups provide a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where you can explore the roots of abusive behavior, learn new coping skills, and commit to lasting change.

Our program is grounded in accountability, respect, and the belief that change is possible when individuals are given the tools and support to grow.

What Are Interpersonal Violence Groups?

Interpersonal Violence Groups, also known as Batterer Intervention Programs (BIPs), are structured group therapy sessions designed to help individuals recognize abusive behaviors, understand their impact, and learn healthier ways to relate to others. These programs are often court-mandated following interpersonal violence charges, but they are equally valuable for those who want to take responsibility for their behavior and make meaningful changes in their relationships.

Our program is facilitated by trained professionals with experience in trauma-informed care, anger management, and family systems therapy. The curriculum is evidence-based and focuses on building insight, empathy, and non-violent communication.

Goals of the Program

The primary goals of our Interpersonal Violence Groups are to:

  • Promote personal accountability
  • Educate participants about the dynamics of power and control
  • Identify and change abusive thinking and behavior patterns
  • Teach non-violent strategies for managing anger, frustration, and conflict
  • Foster empathy for victims and affected family members
  • Support long-term behavioral change

We work to ensure that participants leave the program not just with greater self-awareness, but with the tools to build respectful, non-violent relationships in the future.

Who Can Attend?

These groups are open to:

  • Individuals court-ordered to complete a Batterer Intervention Program
  • Clients referred by probation, parole officers, or attorneys
  • Individuals voluntarily seeking help to stop abusive behavior
  • Partners or family members who wish to better understand dynamics in their relationships

We welcome individuals of all genders and backgrounds. Each group is carefully structured to meet the needs of its participants and is led in a way that fosters mutual respect and safety.

What to Expect in Group Sessions?

Participants typically attend weekly sessions, each lasting about 60 minutes, over the course of 26–52 weeks depending on court or program requirements. Key components of the program include:

  • Education on the cycle of violence and power/control dynamics
  • Identification of abusive language, behavior, and thought patterns
  • Conflict resolution and healthy communication skills
  • Emotion regulation strategies, especially for anger and jealousy
  • Understanding the effects of abuse on partners, children, and families
  • Developing empathy and accountability

Each session builds on the previous one, offering practical tools and group discussion in a structured and supportive format. Participants are expected to be active in the group process and complete any assigned reflection exercises between sessions.

A Safe and Respectful Space for Change

While we maintain a firm stance on accountability, we also approach each participant with respect and compassion. We understand that abusive behavior often stems from deep emotional wounds, unexamined beliefs, or trauma. Our role is not to shame it’s to support individuals in breaking harmful cycles and developing new, healthier patterns of behavior.

All sessions are confidential and conducted in compliance with state and legal standards, including reporting responsibilities where required.
